SEBASTOPOL, Sonoma County — October 31, 2026. Sebastopol is scheduling a series of tree-pruning and removal jobs across several streets and parks ahead of winter rains. In a public notice dated October 29, the city said two local tree companies would work over the next couple of weeks on trees identified by the city arborist as presenting potential threats because of rot or disease.
Which trees will be pruned?
The city’s official tree-work notice lists pear and liquidambar trees at the east end of Libby Park, near Brookhaven School, the sports courts and Gnomies Preschool. The city also plans to prune an oak on the west side of Libby Park along Pleasant Hill Avenue North.
Which locations are scheduled for removals?
According to the same notice, planned removals include two oaks in the center median of Hayden Avenue, oaks along Jewell Avenue behind 500 and 580 Swain Avenue, and a cottonwood in Laguna Youth Park behind the Community Center. The notice does not give a tree-by-tree contractor work schedule or state that every identified tree has already been removed.
What does the city’s reason mean?
Tree decay, structural weakness and disease can make pruning or removal necessary in populated areas, especially near play areas and streets where falling limbs can harm people or block traffic. At the same time, mature trees support shade, habitat and neighborhood character. Residents who want details can ask for the city arborist’s assessment and any replacement planting or mitigation plan instead of assuming each removal is arbitrary or that all trees are beyond recovery.
How to plan around the work
People using Libby Park, Hayden Avenue and Jewell Avenue should watch for temporary cones, equipment and work zones when contractors are present. Do not enter an active felling zone, and follow any posted temporary restrictions. No street-closure hours were specified in the October 29 announcement; the city should be contacted for exact daily work schedules.
To verify the list, read the city’s October 29 notice and its linked public tree-work document. Reporting a separate dangerous public tree should go through Sebastopol Public Works or the city’s service-request channels.
